Originally Presented: October 20, 2016 by Monica Jurado & John Harvey

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) along with the U.S. Department of Transportation are committed to incorporating sustainability practices throughout the pavement life-cycle of a roadway. Awareness of the importance of environmental protection, and the possible impacts associated with the production, use, and retirement of products, has generated considerable interest in the use of assessment methods to better understand and address those impacts. FHWA’s Sustainable Pavements Program was created to reach these objectives through a variety of activities, including working groups with stakeholders from all aspects of a roadway pavement life-cycle. The FHWA Sustainable Pavements Program will be outlined and its latest published resource on assessment methods for environmental performance will be explained.
