Scrap tire use in asphalt pavements is one of the oldest sustainability practices in the asphalt pavements and materials engineering community; however, there is still significant confusion on the part of the industry and user agencies when it comes to the use of scrap tires in pavement mixes. There are a wide variety of technologies, processes, and commercial products that are encompassed by the term "asphalt rubber." Learn about the various methods used to incorporate scrap tires in pavements, and understand how one contractor saved money by using GTR as an additive to modify lesser performance grade (PG) liquid asphalt while achieving properties of polymer modified asphalt and meeting the agency's specifications.
