Performance testing of asphalt mixtures for rutting and cracking has been of interest in recent years for both contractors and agencies. Agencies would like such tests as a means to ensure performance of pavements while contractors view performance testing as a means to increase innovation and competitiveness. Rutting tests such as the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer and Hamburg Wheel Track Tester have been around and implemented by a number of agencies and contractors. While many tests for fatigue, reflection, and thermal cracking have been proposed, very few have been implemented. Both rutting and cracking tests will be needed in approaches to develop balanced mix designs resulting in mixes with optimal performance characteristics. This webinar will provide an introduction to cracking tests to familiarize attendees with current methods being considered for implementation for various types of asphalt cracking under NCHRP Project 9-57.
