Asphalt Alternatives (SR-198). What is the future of road-building materials? Researchers Gayle King and Helen King examine asphalt pavement contractor options in a market of escalating petroleum prices and dwindling asphalt supply. They analyze current and future asphalt extenders including RAP, crumb rubber, sulfur, vegetable oil, and bio-mass materials. A table summarizes the asphalt alternatives in terms of price, availability, and constraints. This executive summary uses outside-the-box thinking to pose the question, “If there are few near-term alternatives for replacing asphalt binders, what available, cost-effective materials can dilute or extend it without sacrificing constructability or performance?” This seven-page report was presented at the NAPA's 2009 Annual Meeting in San Diego. Available as a free download only.
