Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act is focused on Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grants, which assist states in strategically directing resources to improve system performance and efficiency in moving freight. The program provides guidance and support for states and metropolitan planning organizations with considerations for designating both rural and urban critical freight corridors, which can include dedicated truck lanes. These freight corridors will require heavy-duty pavements in good condition with smooth surfaces for maximum freight movement efficiency. This session also highlights the legislation and its relevance to heavy duty pavements.

There have been recent efforts to focus on a balanced mix design approach to pavement material selection and composition. A number of laboratory testing protocols have been developed and can be used to create mixture designs that will provide the performance needed for specific projects. This performance-focused effort differs from the past methodology of recipe-driven design requirements, lending itself well to projects that require heavy duty pavement solutions. With the requirement for thicker cross section pavements, heavy duty pavements often are great candidates for employing a perpetual pavement or a long life pavement design.
